Back in his twenties he used to look at the form of any long-priced race horse winner and after a while he started to get an understanding of the types of long shots that actually won on a regular basis.

The ex-point to pointer Alka Way made a promising start to his career winning a 3-mile point before embarking on a career under rules. He had completed his mandatory 3 runs in maiden hurdles, all over an inadequate 2 miles, to obtain a nice workable handicap mark but was hit with injury that kept him off the track for over 2 years.

He has needed time to get his fitness and wellbeing up since his return in 2020 and his switch to chasing was blighted by a nasty fall that has meant connections have re-routed him back to hurdles.

He has been stepped up in trip to a much more suitable 3 mile plus and he has hinted ability in his second chase, before falling, and last time over hurdles.

Today’s 3m 2f handicap hurdle will be a war of attrition in what is likely to be soft/heavy ground and Alka Steps high knee action looks really suited to this heavy slog.

Alka has run his best races at Fontwell’s quirky figure of eight track and off a lightweight 10 stone in the heavy ground he could easily win this.
